A fascinating insight, not only to his life, but the settings in which he found himself. It explains not only his actions, but his far-from-straightforward environment. Whilst his role in leading the army during the revolution plays a major part, there is much else, both before and after, that is explained. His ability to speak and act (or not!) in line with his principles come through time and again. From his early years to his final hours, there is much to admire.
For anyone looking for an introductory biography of George Washington, this is a reasonable choice. Since the book was written about a century ago-- and the author does quote from Washington's and his contemporaries' correspondence throughout-- the language can be challenging occasionally. The book is not particularly in depth (except maybe as regards his death) but it does effectively give the reader a grasp of the scope of Washington's life, from cradle to grave.
George Washington was the real deal. He was far above the common man in uncommon times. No President since our first President gave so much of self to this nation. How we EVER arrived at how Presidents of today serve is disgusting.
The book was authored well - and presented several insights to other notable characters of the times. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
America was surely blessed by Providence to have had such a man to help bring us into existence. Many helped fashion the governmental forms, but it truly was fortunate that such a man as this was here. It was great to refresh my memory of such greatness and I heartily recommend this book.
I enjoyed reading and seeing a side to an important founding father that I had not really known much about in the past. Yes, in school way back when, I would have found this more interesting and helpful than the trash we were given to read in our history books. I would say, read it. It gives you a lot, let's you ask questions about history in a good way. It does show the harshness of war and the sentiment of the times in a shortened form. It gave me an interest in learning more about him and others from our beginnings. Granted free always helps, but the information learned was excellent and insightful.
A book I downloaded to my , because a) it was for free, b) I like biographies and c) I didn't know anything about George Washington except for that he was the first President of the United States of America.
William Roscoe Thayer wrote this biography in 1922, and the reason for him to do that is stated in the preface, in his own words
"I was interested to discover, if I could, the human residue which I felt sure must persist in Washington after all was said. Owing to the pernicious drivel of the Reverend Weems no other great man in history has had to live down such a mass of absurdities and deliberate false inventions."
The author also feels he should
"...warn the reader that this book aims only at giving a sketch of George Washington's life and acts."
Well, he succeeded in this, and I did enjoy reading it, also because of the style and language used. There were many words I had to look up, not being at all familiar with military terms (furlough? That certainly wasn't part of the curriculum when I learnt English at school several decades ago!), and Mr. Thayer must have done a lot of research; there are footnotes on almost every page, and an extensive source register makes up the last 10 % of the book.
What he did not manage to do, at least not for me, is to convey a clearer picture of George Washington as a person. Yes, his character, his habits (apparently, he was very fastidious with his clothes), his looks and his way of dealing with problems are thoroughly described, as are the military campaigns and political events he was part of. But if I had to sum up in one word what I feel is lacking here, that word would have to be "atmosphere".
You know when you can really delve into a book, into a story, the characters becoming real for you, the places being conjured up in front of your inner eye, complete with sounds and scents? That did not happen for me here, and I certainly do not blame the author; he probably never intended to create something so personal and atmospheric - after all, he said it himself, the book was supposed to be a sketch.
And at that, it is very good.
I agree this was brief, yet was politically unbiased to the extent possible; though native Americans might disagree. Lacked mention of the young surgeon, who recommended, correctly, a tracheostomy at his deathbed and was summarily dismissed by Washington's personal doctor. Martha destroyed his personal letters, so this represent our best insight into the amazing temporment of a remarkable man. Yet little was revealed by the Intense quarrel of ideology between Hamilton and Jefferson, and Washington's struggles or lack thereof to maintain decorum.
